Lake Tahoe, NVCharles Wesley Godwin kicked things off for the The Avett Brothers show at the Tahoe Blue Event Center in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Admittedly, I’m a bit tardy jumping on the Charles Wesley fan wagon. Honestly, I didn’t give his music much of a chance. His name would consistently come up on social media feeds, so I felt it was time to give his discography a listen. I’m glad that I did! CWG wowed the Lake Tahoe crowd for about an hour. One of the highlights for the crowd was when he brought out Scott Avett to perform “Hammer Down,” a duet with Scott off of Charles’ “Lonely Mountain Town” EP. Being a native of West Virginia, Godwin appropriately closed his set with a high energy performance of the John Denver classic, “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” As good as his recorded music is, his live performance is even better. In talking with others in attendance that were unfamiliar with his music, Charles Wesley Godwin gained quite a few new fans.

Speaking of live performances, The Avett Brothers show was a visually striking performance! The Brothers drew many avid fans, as well as a few lifetime followers. One of those lifetime followers was 11 year old Orion, who had seen the Avetts 14 times previously. As if the visually striking performance was not enough, sonically The Avett Brothers were amazing. In addition to the standard instruments such as guitar, bass, and drums, The Avett Brothers show also had cello, harmonica, violin, banjo, and piano. A true musical potpourri for the senses. If you find yourself on the fence on The Avett Brothers after listening to their recorded work, I strongly encourage you to check out an Avett Brothers live event, as it’s so much more than just a performance.
