Newberry, SC (January 22nd, 2020) – As a child I spent many days at my dads house watching him work on his old motorcycle while playing with the neighbors kids out in the yard. There was always a radio on in the background filling the sound track of my youth with various genres of music. Country music was definitely in the forefront a lot of the time and one day these two girls from next door brought over 2 cassette tapes they insisted on listening too. With slower softer songs like “Can I Trust You With My Heart” and “Help Me Hold On” to the rocking “Put Some Drive In Your Country” and “T-R-O-U-B-L-E” I couldn’t stop listening. For me, these songs showcased the best of both worlds, rock and country blended together as one and I loved it. As I walked into the Newberry Opera House this evening my mind flooded with those summer memories in anticipation of hearing those songs live from the man himself….Travis Tritt.

Currently out on a solo tour Travis took the stage for a second night in Newberry, SC to another sold out crowd. With a round of applause and cheering from the packed out venue Tritt didn’t hesitate to start his set of hit songs. “I’m Gonna Be Somebody” and “Where Corn Don’t Grow” had fans instantly singing along. Welcoming fans into what he stated is a living room like atmosphere with the stripped down show Tritt filled the night with moments of storytelling and music. He engaged the crowd with comical insight to his childhood growing up going to coffee shops with his dad listening to the old men talk to being mentored by the legendary Waylon Jennings.  The stand out story of the night was Tritt telling about his concerns of making the “Tell Me I Was Dreaming” video and his concerns playing a disabled veteran and the fear of backlash for doing so. There’s one thing you need to know about Travis before attending a show.  There’s no hiding the fact that he is a proud supporter of our military and a proud American and not ashamed to speak out on those issues. I can tell you no one had an issue with that last night at the conclusion of the song as he stood and saluted the American Flag. 

Explaining his take on the current state of country music and how “Country Ain’t Country No More” Tritt went on to perform other notable hits such as “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’” and “Here’s A Quarter.” Throughout the night Travis spoke of his idols a lot as well, Elvis, Jerry Reed, Bobby Bare and more. The surprise song for me was a cover of The Beatles hit “Help.” Putting his own twist on the song he held everyone’s attention hearing it in a way not heard before. The song was definitely well received with a round of applause. Tritt also paid tribute to his long time friend Waylon Jennings with a medley of his hit songs including “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way,” “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” and “Good Ol’ Boys.” 

Closing out the night and a nearly two and a half hour set with the upbeat, rocking “T-R-O-U-B-L-E” Tritt left the stage to a standing ovation. Attendees filled the lobby lining up at the merchandise booth waiting their turn to get some memorabilia as they spoke of some of their favorite moments from the night. 

Travis Tritt currently has dates listed through October of 2020 that take him all across the United States and into Canada. If you’re a fan of real country music you need to make it a point to get out and see a show near you.
