Johnson City, TN (January 29th, 2020) – On a cold and rainy night fans lined the street waiting to get in to Capone’s for tonight’s show. Having never been to Johnson City, TN myself it was nice to see so many people out in support of live music on a Wednesday night. Stepping inside the atmosphere takes you over. From the old time look of the bar to the raw energy that fills the room in anticipation for show time. Headliners Dirty Honey have rolled in to town, along with guests The Amazon’s, for a night of rock and roll.
British rockers The Amazon’s took to the stage first. Formed in 2014 the band quickly found themselves at the top of the UK charts with their debut, self titled album reaching number 8 in 2017. Following up with their 2019 release, “Future Dust,” the band have brought their high energy show to the state’s for the first time. As Matt Thomson (vocals), Chris Alderton (guitar), Elliot Briggs (bass) and Joe Emmett (drums) played through their set of riff driven music it was evident they were earning new supporters. With songs such as “25,” “In My Mind” and “Black Magic” The Amazons provided a powerful performance engaging the crowd from start to finish. Seeing these guys perform it’s easy to understand why they have received accolades from MTV and BBC.
Standing side stage waiting for tonight’s headliner to begin their show frontman Marc LaBelle took a moment to speak with myself and fellow photographer Tom Biggs. “Are you ready to get dirty” he asked as he headed to his place at the microphone. Fans cheering so loud they almost drowned out the band as they began with “Scars.” Having first seen Dirty Honey back in April 2019 on tour with Red Sun Rising I have been impatiently waiting to attend another show. Standing in the photo pit I found it hard to focus on my job as I just wanted to watch the show. Along with guitarist John Notto, bassist Justin Smolian and drummer Corey Coverstone frontman Marc worked their crowd into a frenzy as they sang along to every song the band performed. The band may be youthful in age but their music is of an old soul. Filled with raw rock vibes reminiscent of the 70’s and early 80’s Dirty Honey provide catchy guitar riffs with lyrical melodies that easily get stuck in your head. For me it’s like the The Black Crowe’s, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith got together for one of those infamous parties you hear about and birthed Dirty Honey. Having said that, it was a nice surprise as the band included covers of the Aerosmith classic “Last Child” and a portion of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”
The band has consistently been touring since the release of their self titled EP in March 2019. Joining shows with other notable acts such as The Who, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Alter Bridge and more has kept Dirty Honey pretty busy and as Marc explained hasn’t left much time for creating new music. However, the group has recently began work on some new material and presented it to their fans this evening. Including “The Wire” and “Don’t Drink The Water” the Los Angeles based band continues with their distinctive sound that has earned them a consistently growing group of followers. Closing out their show with “Rollin’ 7’s,” which lends its name to their current tour, Dirty Honey left the stage to join those in attendance by their merch booth. Taking time to sign autographs and take photos with fans you could see how much the 4 members appreciate everyone for coming out.
With dates currently listed through May 22, 2020 this is a must see show for any one who is a fan of real rock and roll.
