Black Mountain, NC (8/12/21) – I have to start this off being honest by saying I’m not typically a fan of Hip Hop/Rap music. I’m more of a traditional country or rock and roll guy. That being said it may be odd finding me at a Jelly Roll show. Truth is I had never heard of him until December of 2019 when I worked a show of his as a house photographer for Blindhorse Saloon in Greenville, SC. From that night forward I’ve been hooked so when I got the request from Silverado’s in Black Mountain, NC to come cover Jelly’s show for them I jumped at the chance.
As a musician and songwriter myself I pay attention to lyrics a lot and Jelly Roll writes open and honestly. He gives insight to a personal side of him that many can relate to. The way he connects to his fans and conveys these messages on stage is just amazing to watch.
It was a rather nice moment listening to Jelly thank his fans as he described events surrounding this particular show. Originally scheduled for another venue nearby he told how the establishment had doubts of being successful there yet he sold it out in 3 days. Then they wanted to place restrictions on his show so he decided to relocate bringing the show to Silverado’s. Upon doing so another 1500 tickets were released and it sold out once again. He thanked fans also for helping his song “Save Me,” which was released during the pandemic shut downs, to achieve Gold status. He finalized the moment by stating that all his career he’s been told he can’t do something and yet time and time again he proves those people wrong by doing it himself so to always believe in yourself and don’t listen to the naysayers.
The nights set was filled with many notable songs form Jelly’s lengthy catalog. Songs like “Same Asshole,” “Bottle and Mary Jane,” “Creature” and many more had the crowd singing along all night long. He even threw in some extra songs for the night that weren’t planned. A nice extra was the performance of his newest single “Sober” he introduced the crowd to 3hrs before it was to become available on streaming and digital download platforms.
If you haven’t seen a Jelly roll show yet I encourage you to do so. He will be rolling back through North Carolina again on September 24th when he come to Charlotte, NC.
