Mother's Finest sell out The Spinning Jenny in Greer South Carolina

Greer, SC (7/21/22) – Originally formed in 1972 Mother’s Finest has now been around for 50yrs. It’s not often you see a band with such a long standing career and still touring. A sold out show at The Spinning Jenny in Greer, SC gives proof that groups like this are very much appreciated. As Joyce Kennedy said from the stage, “radio doesn’t offer much of anything good these days.”  It was a great thing to look out over the crowd and see years of fans fill the room. Some in attendance were seeing the group for their first time.

Opening act JET, which features drummer Tez Sherard of Edwin McCain Band, warmed up the crowd. Playing through a set list of classic hits from groups like Pink Floyd, James Brown, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Aretha Franklin and more. The band really does a great job showcasing each members talent while adding a modern flavor to the well known songs.

As the intro music began to play and silhouettes could be seen across the stage fans chanted for the nights main act. A nearly 2hr show kept the crowd on their feet all night dancing and singing along. There’s a lot of bands out today who could take a lesson from Mother’s Finest on how to do a show. There’s no fancy stage gimmicks, just musicians playing real music and making real connections with those who come to see them. A breath of fresh air really in todays over saturated market of junk. Sounds of “Baby Love,” “Piece of the Rock,” “I Can’t Believe” and many more songs resonated through the former skating rink and old country store now turned music venue. Amongst the crowd people spoke of their favorite tunes and memories of yesterdays as Mother’s Finest provided a journey through five decades of music.

The band spoke of music bringing people together in this messed up world we live in. The unity inside The Spinning Jenny fed the energy of the show. Joyce Kennedy and Glenn Murdock traded lead vocals as Moses Mo and John Hayes traded guitar licks. Dion Murdock (drums) and Juan Van Dunk (bass) held down the rhythm section giving the band that signature funk rock sound that’s become as iconic as their name. Many people listen to certain genres of music for various reasons and each genre brings out certain feelings in an individual. Mother’s Finest may be labeled Funk Rock but they really capture parts of all music. Lyrical content, rock riffs, funk grooves, soul, R&B and more making their concerts not just a show but an experience.
