Black Mountain, NC (7/23/21) – The Summerland Tour is an annual event put on each year since 2012. Founded by Art Alexakis of the headlining group Everclear the concert features bands typically formed in the 1990’s or who found success then. Making a stop in Black Mountain, NC at Silverado’s is a bit of a special moment that many may not even realize. Art’s mother and father are originally from the area prior to moving to California where he was born. During Everclear’s set the frontman took time to speak of memories during previous visits to the area through the years as his mom had moved back prior to her passing and how he wrote the song “Fire Maple” just down the road sitting on his grandmothers back porch. Of the course the group included hits such as “Father of Mine,” and “I Will Buy You A New Life” before closing their set with an encore of “Santa Monica.”

The night was preluded by other notable acts as well. Hoobastank had the crowd spinning “Out of Control” during their energetic set. One may actually forget how many great songs this band actually has until hearing them all together. Of course every one has to catch a breather at some point and that was provided by the groups hugely successful hit “The Reason” as fans danced and sang along.

Living Colour is a band I’ve wanted to see for quite some time but just has not worked out until now. As a musician myself I’ve been eager to see these guys play and admire their talent in person. The band is widely known for their song “Cult of Personality,” which featured Art Alexakis as a guest singer during their set, but the band has more to offer. The 4 piece provides powerhouse vocals, flashy, effortless guitar playing and thundering bass and drums as they rock and funk through other great songs such as “Love Rears It’s Ugly Head” and “Desperate People.”
Wheatus

Wheatus was the opening act and got the crowd going early. Known for their song “Teenage Dirtbag” the group did seem a bit youthful on stage. You could see genuine excitement amongst the group as they looked out over the crowd. Frontman and founding member Brendan Brown led the band through a number of energetic songs drawing the crowd in as the sun faded behind the mountains of western North Carolina.
The Summerland Tour has dates listed across the country through October 6th ending in Jacksonville, FL. If you’re looking for a bit of a throw back and some nostalgia then this is a don’t miss event.
