Columbia, SC (February 27th, 2020) – Kyle Daniel may not be a name you are familiar with but I’m telling you that you should be. I picked up on his music about 2yrs ago with his debut self-titled EP (Kyle Daniel) and have been hooked ever since. Now with a second EP (What’s There To Say) out and heavy touring in support of it Kyle and his band have rolled in to the New Brookland Tavern in Columbia, SC for a show this evening. Attending my 3rd I‘m here as more of a fan than a photojournalist. With music and a live show as good as Kyle’s he sure makes it hard to focus and not just get lost in the moment.
As the local openers took their places on stage a crowd gathered around. Obviously with some fans of their own I knew I must have been missing out on something. Let me say that Paisley & The Birdwalkers are the reason you should make it a point to get out and see live local music. An all girl band led by singer and guitarist Paisley Marie this group looked like natural veterans on stage. Everything about this band is just solid. From country to rock, soft, subtle, emotional vocals to soaring, powerful rawness Paisley commands the crowd along with her band.
Laurel Maccallum on drums keeps a steady driving beat that keeps the band together followed up with Kat Gandy on bass who really knows how to work a fret board providing the deep undertones. Rounding out the group is Cassidy Spencer on keys for a nice extra layer of depth. One thing that stands out about this band, other than their amazing songwriting, is the harmonies and backing vocals. Every member of this band can sing and their voices blend well together. Filling the stage with comical banter between songs they really know how to work a crowd as they flowed flawlessly from original songs like “Eighteen” to the fun and quirky “I Want You To Want Me” by Cheap Trick. If their show wasn’t enough to impress me already I had a chance to speak with Paisley after the show where she informed me that the group has played less than 10 shows together.
Speaking to some members of the crowd during the set change I found that I was not the only one willing to travel for tonight’s show. Some fans of Kyle Daniel had driven from Asheville, NC down to see him perform. Waiting for the band to kick off their set you could feel the excitement grow in the room. As the house music faded the band fired up right in to their musical roller coaster of a set list. Kyle can take you from the verge of breaking down with some of the truest, most in depth lyrics that will make you soul search right before he cranks it back up with a down and dirty southern rock guitar riff layered with some bluesy lead work. From start to finish Kyle and his band never let off the throttle as the intensity of the softer melodic songs is just as equal as the all out rockers. Backed with a band that provides a solid foundation and includes writing partner Seth Rentfrow this group has a way of drawing you in and you constantly find yourself shaking your head in amazement throughout the night.
If the instrumental work of the group isn’t enough on its own the raw raspy vocals of Kyle are an added bonus. Filling the room with a powerful presence the frontman sings with truth and conviction, a quality that many entertainers today just don’t have. Kyle and his band make you feel the music, not just hear it.
With songs like “Hangover Town“ and ”God Bless America (Damn Rock n Roll)“ Kyle keeps fans on their toes giving catchy hooks and sing along melodies that have a modern vibe but remain true to real country and southern rock. Showcasing that southern influence the band dove into some Allman Brothers music mid set giving the crowd some great 3 guitar work. Watching the band perform it easy to see why they have been invited to share the stage with the likes of Charlie Daniels, Blackberry Smoke and the Marshall Tucker Band. Closing the show with “Born To Lose“ fans met Kyle and band at the merch booth for photos and autographs.
If you missed this show you’ll get another chance to see him in the area soon. You’ll have to wait until he gets back to the states from a trip to London and Berlin performing with Luke Combs and Darius Rucker. On April 17th the band will be at The Tin Roof in Charlotte, NC and on April 19th back in Columbia, SC at The Tin Roof as well. Both of these shows are free events so no excuses to not be there.
