Lake Tahoe, NV (8/25/26) – How on earth has it been 25 years since ‘Drops of Jupiter’ ruled the airwaves? Where does the time go? Perhaps there’s no real answer to that philosophical question. Or perhaps, the answer is in the music. Afterall, music is timeless.
Matt Nathanson kicked things off for the night’s festivities. Nathanson is a singer-songwriter who had an absolute smash of a hit in “Come On Get Higher“. A fact that he playfully reminded us of by saying, “if you don’t know the words to this song, you probably didn’t have sex between 2007 and 2012.” Nathanson performed a great set, complete with light banter and good tunes.
Next up was Barenaked Ladies. I was utterly surprised at the number of their songs that I knew and enjoyed. Once again, music is timeless. The band played all the crowd favorites like; “One Week”, “The Big Bang Theory Theme”, “Brian Wilson”, and “If I Had $1,000,000“. But wait, there’s more!!!
Tyler Stewart came out from behind his drum kit and absolutely ROCKED a stellar cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell”. What????? Barenaked Ladies were very entertaining, fun to watch, and sounded surprisingly very good.
Now for what we were all there for…… Train.
Pat Monohan wasted no time announcing their presence with authority. They came out swinging with “She’s On Fire”. Followed by the energetic “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”. Monohan matched every ounce of the band’s energy with his crowd interaction. He spent a great deal of time catching phones and taking selfies with them before tossing them back.
Monohan flawlessly performed the band’s biggest hits and crowd favorites such as “Meet Virginia” and “Hey, Soul Sister”. The latter which garnered the band with their third Grammy Award in 2011.
The show was energetic, complete with sing-a-longs, cover songs (Jack & Diane, Stone in Love, Take Me Home, Country Roads), and confetti cannons. It felt more like a celebration than just simply a concert. Music is timeless.
Aptly so, “Drops of Jupiter” was reserved for the end of the set. To say that the 8,000 plus fans were ready would be an understatement. I’d bet they could hear the crowd singing alongall the way down in Reno.
Monohan also paid tribute to Dolly Parton (who we lost that day) by covering “I will Always Love You”.
Starting with Matt Nathanson, to Barenaked Ladies, and all the way through Train, the entire night was deeply entertaining. Pat Monohan and Train showed just why they’re still in the business 30 years later. And the music? The music is timeless.
