Whiskey Myers at Township Auditorium in Columbia South Carolina

Columbia, SC (4/9/22)Whiskey Myers is one of those bands that just keeps getting better and better. I’ve seen this band when they were playing 550 capacity venues like The Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC to now selling out shows in auditoriums, amphitheater’s and more. With 5 previous album releases and relentless touring the band has gained a loyal fan base and shows no signs of slowing down. Tonight finds the group in Columbia, SC at the Township Auditorium where they kick off the show with their latest single “John Wayne.”  The current “Is A Comin’ Tour” is a precursor to the upcoming “Tornillo” tour in support of the groups 6th album of the same name to be released in July 2022. A dynamically energetic show filled with songs such as “Frogman,” “Die Rockin’” and “How Far” filled fans with excitement as fists filled the air and people danced in the aisles. A stripped down acoustic version of “Reckoning” and other songs such as “Stone” provide the more somber mood for the evening. Seeing how the bands stage show has progressed through the years to engage the audience and the composing of songs to go with it has been a great thing. Many bands begin to fall off and lose steam, Whiskey Myers is not one of those bands. They are an authentic group providing real music and songs that hit on a lot of relatable topics from drug use, family, loss of life and more that allow fans to do more than just listen but actually connect with what they hear.

Another band making a name for themselves is the Read Southall Band who opened tonight’s show. With a raw gritty sound the band worked the stage proving themselves to those in attendance. Fuzzed out guitars and driving beats provided a high energy with an old style southern rock vibe but modern nuances. However, the group would mention that many fans along the tour had stated they needed to add some slower music to the set to mix it up a bit. This led to the group performing the song “Why,” which is honestly the only song I knew before tonight’s set. “Rose Gold” was also another slower moment before the band kicked things back up. The bands live performance definitely won me over and many others as well. After show would find me streaming the groups albums on the ride back home wondering how I had been missing out on such a great group. Don’t be like me, check this band out sooner than later.
